Modifier 24: Unrelated evaluation and management service by the same physician during a postoperative period
When it is appropriate
Append modifier 24 to an evaluation and management code to show that the visit, occurring during another procedure's postoperative global period, is unrelated to the surgery that created that global period and should be paid on its own.
When it is not appropriate
Do not use 24 for a visit that is actually managing a complication of, or following up on, the original surgery; that care is included in the global surgical package and is not separately payable.
CMS preference
Use 24 specifically for unrelated evaluation and management work in a global period; use 79 instead when the same day service is an unrelated procedure rather than an evaluation and management visit.
