Modifier TC: Technical component
When it is appropriate
Append modifier TC when billing only the technical component of a test or procedure, meaning the equipment, supplies, and staff time, while a separate provider bills the professional interpretation with modifier 26.
When it is not appropriate
Do not use TC when the same entity is billing the entire global service, and do not use it expecting it to resolve an NCCI PTP bundling denial, since it addresses component splitting, not bundling.
CMS preference
TC is the counterpart to 26 for splitting a global code into its technical piece; it is not one of the modifiers CMS lists as able to bypass an NCCI PTP edit.
